STEVE EVANS poetically speaking
TIME TIME TIME TIME TIME TIME TIME TIME TIME TIME TIME TIME TIME
Womb With A View
The hands of time
Took my prime
And never gave it back
The trials of life
And years of strife
T'was an unprovoked attack
That cosy womb
Had it had more room
Might have been the place to stay
Never setting foot in the outside world
Except on holiday
Time
If time was an island
Would you swim from the shore
If time was a lock
Would you open the door
If time stood still
Like the fool on the hill
And the wings of a dove
Would do as you will
Would you fly through the sky
Like a bat out of hell
Would you head for the past
With great tidings to tell
Would you aim far ahead
For the future to see
Or would you stand your ground
And stay here with me?
Lady Time
When you've more memories
Than you've memories left to make
When you've had more excursions
Than you have excursions left to take
The ticking clock speeds up
Lady time wears big knickers
And forgets her make up
She flashes by
Days blur into weeks
A week crashes into months
And birthdays scrunch together
As do funerals
Death pushes tender touch from our reach
But not from minds in pain
Is it Lady Time's goal
To make them touchable again?
The Seer
"We shall see"
Said the seer
On his knees a bended
"Time will tell"
So he said
All mysterious and splendid.
Cast Adrift
Cast adrift
Far from the shore
A rift in the Star Trek thing
My time line's not in sync anymore
Some days it seems I've lost my way
Some days, I don't know, it's hard to say
I'm played like a ball in a restless sea
Pushed by the fates enveloping me
Laughed at by those little gremlins
Whose job makes ours tougher
Shadows on the edge of your mind
That thrive while we suffer
Don't tell me tomorrow's another day
And when the sun shines
We'll go back out to play
Don't tell me life's a blast
And to savour each parsec while it lasts
I see the black cloud
That billows and flaps
And wraps us up
Tight as a shroud
I see the end
I see the deep
I see the release found in unsettled sleep
I know what it is to wither
To be afraid and alone
To stand there and dither
I know what it is to embrace the abyss
To step in the dark and not to resist
To close my eyes and swallow the draught
To enter the dream where those gremlins laughed
I know you know
That the end's down below
In a fathomless pit
Where the nightmares grow
Flying Round In The Sky
Flying round in the sky
Flying way up high
My oh my
Stretch your arms out wide
Press them down at your side
Time and tide
It's so fleeting
Of all the hearts we hear beating
Ours pumps too
Across the busy avenue
Of our dreams
And nothing is as real
As that seems
Lose yourself in the kiss
Don't ask what you think of this
Simply bliss
The smallest things are there
Floating round in the air
Ours to share
It's so fleeting
Of all the hearts we hear beating
Ours pumps too
Across the busy avenue
Of our dreams
And nothing is as real
As that seems.
Flying round in the sky
You and I
Flying round in the sky
You and I
Life In A Nutshell
Do you still come here?
Have I still got your ear?
Do those fleeting tweeting moments play upon your mind?
Do you ever wonder, ‘if I look what might I find?’
Life in a nutshell in the flash of a thigh
Life in the fast lane in a tabby cats eye
What was is past and what is is cast
Tomorrow supposes today won’t last.
The Word
Come or go, tomorrow will know.
Whither or grow, the future will show.
Empty or full, the engine will pull.
Brightly or dull, the darkness will cull.
Beyond the red line
Down the bottom of a mine
(space)
At the top of the stair
Down the back of a chair
(space)
The light,
She spills out everywhere.
In or out, ne'er cast a clout.
Round an' about, no shadow of a doubt.
Upside down, on the strings of a clown.
Spend a penny or a pound,
The hands of time go round and around.
Beyond the red line
Down the bottom of a mine
(space)
Clamped over a chair
In the dragon's lair
(space)
The word,
She spat out everywhere.
Do It Again
I've been up
I've been down
I've seen my journey
Turn around
Been here
Been there
Looking back
It's all a blur
Heads held high
Sights kept low
Someone else
Always stole the show
Joining in
Or opting out
Never sure
Always doubt
One step forward
One step back
Another time
Another tack
Some say yes
Some say no
Some come
Others go
Life and love
Loss and pain
But if I could
I'd do it again
(Or would I?)
Shifting Sand
You try to do your best
Or you say you do
But do you think
You'd pass the test
If he came to you?
Don't blink
The mirror sees all
And nothing is new
Like he does, without choice
Speaks in the same voice
And there is the clue
You can't measure yourself
Looking down or from within
Stare hard, go deep
Stifle a grin
Because what you see
He or she, you or me
Is what you let it be
Sands shift
The earth moves
Colours are broken
Rocks crumble to dust
And truth is a token
But believe it we must
Trust tells us to
So we try our best
And in the end
What more can we do?
Old Man
Old man what are you seeing?
Through those foggy old eyes
When you're smiling at the girls
Do you even realise?
When you walk down the street
And those people you meet
It's not you that they see
But the shell of what you used to be.
Old man what are you seeing?
Through those tired old eyes
When you forget what you were about to say
And you don't remember half of yesterday
When your bones creak
Because your back's weak
It's not you that's there
But the ghost of what you once were
Old man what are you seeing?
Through those wise old eyes
The soul that sailed the ocean
The force life set in motion
The hero when it told
The heat when it was cold
Remember it was you life found
It's for you alone the wheels go round.
