The Honey Bee

A honey bee sat on my knee
And said he wasn't moving
"But you'll have to go I hope you know"
I said, sounding disapproving
"Buzz buzz buzz" was all he'd say
After I suggested he went away
He hid his ears behind his wings
And pretended to think of other things
The incessant droning wore me out
"You can't even sing" I had to shout
"That's birds" the bee replied
A little mystified
But it seemed to get his goat
Because he looked at me and here I quote
"Zzzz I do have a sting old chum"
And to emphasise his point he lifted up his bum
"I think that'll hurt you more than me"
I said acting tough
An expression of derision told me he'd had enough
"Bees don't sing you nasty man"
Was the little guy's reply
"We defy the laws of physics
By learning how to fly
And we pollinate the flora
In fact without us you would die
Now let me get my strength back
It should only take a minute
Then I'll be on my way
And you can get back in it"
Feeling guilty now I paused for thought
While the bee recharged his motor
Between two stools he had me caught
Feeling like a bloater
He flexed his wings and the drone increased
He was about to fly away
But before he went he looked at me
And he had one more thing to say
"There is a secret of which I'm aware
That I'm willing now with you to share
I will whisper in your ear
If you let me come that near"
Then lightly lifting off my knee
That mysterious little honey bee
Flew up to my shoulder landing on my neck
I waited for his secret but holy flipping heck!
He stung me in the ear lobe
The pain was so acute
But that buzzing little demon thought it was a hoot
Lying sore on the ground with a ringing in my ear
I was trying hard to concentrate because I could hear singing near
"Men are so naive and willing to believe what did he expect
I'm just a little insect"
Now feeling like a fool
With him flying round my head
Was I just delirious
Because then he also said
"My secret is the bees can sing
We often sing when on the wing
We're the souls of broken hearts
Standing on the ramparts
And though as yet you hardly know
A seed's been set and is about to grow
By the way, did I mention
We emanate from the fourth dimension?"
And with that he buzzed away
It was quite an odd, interesting day
I'm sure you will agree
That began... when a honey bee landed on my knee.
